Audiobooks by Robert Keable

In August 2024 I was invited to speak at a monthly meeting of the Weston Turville U3A at Aylesbury Rugby Club. This was my 28^th U3A talk about my grandfather Robert Keable and his scandalous novel Simon Called Peter. It is rare for anyone attending my talks to have heard of Robert Keable, or any of his novels, but occasionally one of the U3A members has prepared for my talk by reading or at least starting to read Simon Called Peter. Up until this point no one had been interested enough in the novel to want to read it out loud.

At the end of my Weston Turville talk Simon Evers approached me to ask if I would mind if he produced an audio copy of my grandfather’s book. He explained that he enjoyed reading books, which were then posted online for free on the website LibriVox. Simon has read over 100 books for LibriVox, specialising in out of copyright novels by the likes of Arnold Bennett, Anthony Trollope and John Galsworthy.

Although Simon did not need anyone’s permission to read Keable’s book, since he died almost 100 years ago, I did appreciate the fact that he asked me and I said I was delighted by his offer.  Simon clearly works fast because he has now finished both Simon Called Peter and its sequel Recompense and they are both listed on LibriVox and free to download. I think he has done a brilliant job and strongly recommend both audiobooks to anyone interested.

Modestly, Simon did also point out that Peter Joyce, an actor, has also recorded a copy of Simon Called Peter which one can buy for £15.99 on audible. I must confess I prefer Simon’s softer voice than the more thespian tones of Peter Joyce.
